CAPM preparation has to cover more than PMBOK terminology

The current CAPM exam spans four distinct areas: Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts, Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies, Agile Frameworks/Methodologies, and Business Analysis Frameworks. Business analysis alone represents more than a quarter of the current outline, so candidates who study CAPM as a miniature old-style PMP exam can leave a large gap.

PM CertiPrep's CAPM simulator separates practice by domain and combines concept checks with situational questions. The goal is to know both the vocabulary and when to apply it.

Official exam snapshot
  • 150 questions
  • 180 minutes
  • Fundamentals & Core Concepts: 36%
  • Predictive, Plan-Based: 17%
  • Agile Frameworks/Methodologies: 20%
  • Business Analysis Frameworks: 27%

Why CAPM practice should mix concepts and scenarios

CAPM candidates need a precise base vocabulary, but exam questions can also test how concepts connect. A schedule technique, requirements decision or agile role becomes easier to remember when you understand why it is used and what problem it solves. Practice sets should therefore alternate between direct concept discrimination and realistic project situations.

A good review process also prevents “familiarity” from masquerading as mastery. If you recognize an answer but cannot explain why the alternatives are wrong, the concept is not yet stable enough for exam pressure.

What you get in the PM CertiPrep simulator

🧱

📐

Predictive methods

Scope, schedule, cost, quality, risk and plan-based delivery decisions.

🔁

Agile frameworks

Adaptive principles, roles, events, flow and iterative ways of working.

🔎

Four full mocks

Take 150-question sessions to practise time management and endurance.

🧠

Detailed explanations

Turn every incorrect answer into a specific concept to review.

How to divide your CAPM study time

Use the official domain weights as a starting point rather than giving every subject equal time. Fundamentals has the largest share, but Business Analysis is close behind. Agile plus predictive methods account for another substantial portion. After your first diagnostic, adjust the allocation toward your own weak areas.

If you are new to project management, build the conceptual map first: project life cycles, roles, plans, baselines, requirements, change, risk, value and delivery approaches. Then use practice questions to test whether you can distinguish similar terms under pressure.

Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies

Question 7. You are managing a project and need to calculate the schedule variance (SV). The earned value (EV) of the project is $200,000, and the planned value (PV) is $180,000. What is the schedule variance (SV)?

  1. A$20,000
  2. B-$20,000
  3. C$380,000
  4. D-$380,000
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A

Schedule variance (SV) is calculated as EV – PV. In this case, EV ($200,000) minus PV ($180,000) gives a schedule variance of $20,000, indicating the project is ahead of schedule.

Focus: Demonstrate an understanding of a project management plan schedule.

Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies

Question 8. A project is halfway through its planned duration. You observe the following data: Planned Value (PV) = $100,000 Earned Value (EV) = $80,000 Actual Cost (AC) = $90,000 What is the cost variance (CV) and schedule variance (SV) for this project?

  1. ACV = -$10,000; SV = -$20,000
  2. BCV = -$10,000; SV = $20,000
  3. CCV = $10,000; SV = -$20,000
  4. DCV = -$20,000; SV = -$10,000
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A

Cost Variance (CV) = EV - AC = $80,000 - $90,000 = -$10,000 (over budget). Schedule Variance (SV) = EV - PV = $80,000 - $100,000 = -$20,000 (behind schedule).

Focus: Determine how to document project controls of predictive, plan-based projects.

Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies

Question 9. Your organization uses a functional structure, and each department works independently on different tasks. Which project management approach would be most appropriate for this type of structure?

  1. AAgile, due to its flexibility in managing cross-functional teams.
  2. BPredictive, plan-based, as it provides structure and control.
  3. CHybrid, as it blends flexibility with predictability.
  4. DLean, to minimize waste and improve efficiency.
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B

A functional structure benefits from a predictive, plan-based approach as it involves clearly defined roles and responsibilities, with each department working independently but according to the project plan. This approach provides the structure needed for this type of organization.

Focus: Explain when it is appropriate to use a predictive, plan-based approach.

Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies

How to use practice exams effectively

A question bank is most valuable when it changes what you study next. Use this four-step cycle instead of simply chasing a score.

1

Baseline

Answer a mixed diagnostic without notes. Record your result by domain, not only the overall percentage.

2

Diagnose

Review every incorrect answer and every correct answer you guessed. Identify the reasoning pattern you missed.

3
